The Japan boys’ team closed out the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Championships with a new meet record in the 400 medley relay with their time of 3:35.14.

They were coming into the race with the 100 back, 100 breast, and 100 fly champions on their relay, making them the heavy favorites for the gold medal.

Toya Hirata led the team off in 54.59, swimming the only sub-55 backstroke leg in the field. This was about a tenth off the 54.43 he swam to win the gold medal in the individual event on night one of the meet.

The breaststroke leg saw Yusei Imaizumi split 59.54 on the breaststroke, four tenths faster than the flat start 59.98 he swam on Tuesday night when he won the event.

Michika Enomoto had a phenomenal swim on the butterfly leg, opening in 23.64 on the first 50, faster than the Japanese freestyler Eita Kawaura‘s 23.72 on the opening 50. He came home in 27.83 to split a monster 51.47, pulling the Japan team into a near three second lead.

Kawaura swam 23.72/25.82 to split 49.54, stopping the clock in 3:35.14 to take almost half a second off the United States’ 2024 record time of 3:35.60.

Three of Japan’s four legs were faster with the biggest differences in splits for Japan coming in the breaststroke and fly legs. Imaizumi was about seven tenths faster than Polyak was in 2024, and Enomoto was four tenths faster than Cox’s fly split.
