ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The family of a refugee man found dead Sunday along the Genesee River Trail is speaking out as Rochester Police investigate his death as a homicide.
The victim has been identified as Mmunga Eloco, a Congolese man whose body was discovered along the trail. RPD believes Eloco was murdered and his body was then dumped at the location.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with Eloco’s cousin, Mpenzi Yohana, near where the body was found.
Yohana says does not have any suspects in mind at this time. “We don’t have any idea as of right now. So we are still waiting on the police report,” Yohana said.
Eloco came to the U.S. as a refugee from a camp in the African country of Malawi about two years ago. He had become a community staple in Rochester’s Congolese community.
“We were all playing soccer together on the same team. He was one of our important players in our team. So for us its a big loss,” Yohana said. “He was also in the choir mass at our church.”
Eloco’s friend, Baruani Kibangula, told News10NBC through a translator that he was shocked to hear the news.
“First I was surprised and shocked because Mmunga was a person who didn’t have any problems with anyone. So there was not any sign of something like that happening to him,” Kibangula said in Swahili.
Eloco’s family members are calling for justice.
“When I heard the news I was heartbroken,” Mmunga Tawimbi, Eloco’s father, said through a translator. “Things like this should not be continuous, they should end.”
“Our parents, ran away trying to find peace. They ran away because of being killed by guns and knives. But at the same time, hearing one of our brother’s life was taken was a sad news,” Yohana said.
Rochester Police have not confirmed any additional updates since they identified Eloco. The Major Crimes Homicide Unit is asking anyone with information to call 911.
