ALBANY, N.Y. — An Albany woman is in custody, accused of a bomb plot meant to kill New York lawmakers in the state capitol.
The FBI arrested Jessica Bowie on Wednesday. Images show Bowie at a Home Depot in Rensselaer, allegedly purchasing items to make a bomb.
Investigators believe Bowie was inspired by ISIS, messaging with them through different social media platforms. Investigators say Bowie recently converted to Islam and became much more radical in the last five months.
“She told the source that she went from a little girl waving American flag after nine over 11 to now having stickers of the fallen towers. Folks, let that sink in. Again, Miss Bowie didn’t just want to kill lawmakers. She wanted a complete disruption of our government,” said Craig Tremaroli, FBI Special Agent in Charge.
Bowie is charged with attempting to support terrorists. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.
Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York released a statement on the plot, saying in part: “I’m grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation and to the New York State Police for their work to apprehend this dangerous individual.”
State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt released a statement: “The announcement regarding an ISIS-inspired terrorist plot targeting our State Capitol building is not only disturbing but reinforces why law enforcement at all levels must communicate and work together for the safety and well being of New Yorkers. I want to thank the Department of Justice, FBI and New York State Police for their immediate action that undoubtedly saved lives.”
