ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Pencils & Paper, a program that provides free school supplies to teachers in high-need schools across the Greater Rochester area, has moved to Rochester Rehabilitation Center after 10 years with Jewish Family Services.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic went shopping with teachers to see what the program offers.
Wendy Robinson, a third-grade science teacher in the Rochester City School District, made her third visit to the program. She said through Pencils & Paper, she’s saved thousands of dollars on folders, markers, pencils and everything needed to set students up for success.
“As a teacher you spend so much trying to decorate and get a safe space for the kids. Create that atmosphere. And a lot of us can’t afford it. We’re overworked and underpaid. You have to love what you do. It has to be more than a passion,” Robinson said.
Michele Alley has been teaching for 17 years and has taken part in the program for a decade. Badzic went shopping with her and saw her excitement over items like a straw tower for team building.
“This is a straw tower and I just thought.. This will be so fun for team building one of the first few weeks of school,” Alley said.
She also picked up brand new books that would be of interest to kids.
Last year the program helped more than 700 teachers. It’s all made possible by fundraisers and donations.
“They understand the importance of what this is and what it brings to the community and our students. They really come through for us,” said Darrell Whitbeck, president and CEO of Rochester Rehabilitation Center.
