From Carrick’s appointment in January, United earned more points than every other Premier League team (39). That secured them a third-place finish in 2025-26 and qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2022-23.
An overall positive pre-season combined with a smart transfer window will leave United’s supporters far more hopeful about this season.

The Opta supercomputer’s pre-season predictions show Manchester United as most likely to finish in third place in 2026-27 across its pre-season Premier League simulations. They secured that position in 9.6% of the 10,000 season sims.
Last season was only the fifth time the Red Devils have finished in the top three since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. In those thirteen seasons, United have been the fifth-best-performing team in the competition with 862 points, fewer than rivals Man City (1,096), Liverpool (1,007), Arsenal (951) and Chelsea (889).
Carrick, who was rewarded with a permanent two-year contract in May, now begins his first full campaign as head coach. He’s overseen a midfield rebuild this summer, with the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, while Brighton’s Carlos Baleba looks set to complete the overhaul.
Club CEO Omar Berrada has said that United are looking to win the Premier League title within two years.
The Opta supercomputer does give them an outside chance of causing an upset this season, winning the Premier League title in 6.6% of its 10,000 pre-season simulations. To do that, they would need to fend off Arsenal (40.6%), Manchester City (19.6%) and Liverpool (9.2%), who all came out as more likely title-winners across the sims.
With many of the Premier League’s top sides having new managers, there are a lot of question marks about what exactly to expect from those clubs in 2026-27. That could potentially open the door for someone to cause a shock at the top.
A minimum for United this season must be qualification for the Champions League, which is considered likely by the supercomputer. The Red Devils finished in a top-four spot in 33.1% of its pre-season simulations – with only Arsenal (80.4%), Man City (60.1%) and Liverpool (40.8%) doing so more often.
If English clubs perform well in Europe, then there is the possibility that fifth place would be unlocked for Champions League qualification. That’s happened in each of the last two seasons after the results by English clubs accumulated the most UEFA coefficient points. United’s projected chance of finishing in the top five places of the Premier League is 41.7%.
