Movies in the Park
The Movies in the Park series continues on Thursday with a screening of “Miracle”, the 2004 film about the U.S. men’s hockey team’s victory at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. It’s happening at ESL Ballpark.
Movies in the Park is a free, family-friendly series of movie screenings at popular spots around the county on a giant outdoor projector. The ESL Ballpark screenings start at 7:45 p.m., with the ballpark gates opening at 7 p.m. The rest of the screenings begin at dusk, around half an hour after sunset. Here’s the schedule for the rest of the season:
Thursday, Aug. 20 at ESL Ballpark: Miracle Friday, Aug. 28 at Seneca Park Zoo: CarsPound the Ground 5K
The annual Pound the Ground 5K, a fundraiser to support programs for local veterans, is happening on Thursday evening at Mendon Ponds Park. The run and walk supports the Veterans Outreach Center, which provides no-cost services to more than 2,000 veterans each year.
Check in begins at 5 p.m. and the race begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Stewart Lodge. You can register and see a course map here.
People can run individually or as a team. Active-duty military, reservists and veterans are invited to compete for the coveted Golden Boot. The military branch with the top three fastest times will be recognized with an engraved plaque. Businesses can run as a Corporate Road Warrior team, with the fastest organization taking home a trophy.
Free vision screenings at Strong Museum
As the new school year approaches, children can get free vision screenings while visiting the Strong National Museum of Play on Thursday. The screenings, included with admission, are from noon to 2 p.m. in the Adams Atrium.
The screenings are for children ages Pre-K through high school. It’s part of a partnership between the Flaum Eye Institute and CooperVision, aiming to give children free screenings to spot potential vision issues or diseases. You can get tickets to the museum here.
Free cat vaccinations
Lollypop Farm’s community pet care series continues on Thursday with free vaccinations for cats at the Hochstein School on 50 North Plymouth Ave.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. while supplies last. Cats are required to be secured in a carrier, crate, or safe enclosure. Lollypop Farm’s staff will be there to answer questions and connect community members with services. You can see other upcoming vaccination events here.
