Thousands of people who live in Northwest Indiana are still without power nearly a week after a powerful storm devastated the region, but one woman is finding ways to give her neighborhood light, love and kindness.
Tamye Diaferio lives in East Chicago where she runs a small but mighty non-profit called Paying It Forward.
“I cannot sit on my hands with air conditioning and power when I see the rest of the city suffering,” said Diaferio. “So, I decided to do something.”
Diaferio was one of the few people on her block who had power. She was able to cook meals in her home and work with a local church to distribute them.
When she lost power this week, she started making snack bags for kids and adults.
“Paying It Forward does not have any funding, so when we do stuff, it is literally me trying to get people to donate,” she said. “And if I have to come out of my pocket with money and bills are late, that is just what I have to do for the community and for kids.”
Diaferio also has a Caring Cabinet that is stocked with nonperishable foods and other essentials. She says the lights being off actually brought her community closer together.
“The power might be off, but we are lighting up the community right now. Not just myself, all the community leaders that I am working with. We are lighting up the community, and the community is feeling it,” she said.
