The Third Saturday in October will return to its roots this fall.
Alabama football announced in a news release Wednesday that both the Crimson Tide and Tennessee will sport their home jerseys in the clash for the first time since 1970, returning to a once-longstanding tradition.
“This series is built on decades of tradition, and we’re excited to bring back a piece of its history beginning this season,” Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said.
The rivalry last featured a color-on-color uniform matchup on Oct. 17, 1970, 56 years to the day of this year’s meeting between the two schools. The agreement was brokered between Alabama’s and Tennessee’s administrations, head coaches and the SEC.
It will run for the 2026 and 2027 installments of the rivalry, which will mark the first time the Volunteers have ever worn their orange top inside Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
“The Alabama-Tennessee rivalry is one of the most historic in all of college football,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “I know how much this game means to our fans, and the tradition and pageantry surrounding it is second to none. This will be another unique element that makes the ‘Third Saturday in October’ so special to both universities.”
The Crimson Tide will look to win its first game at Neyland Stadium since 2020, after it suffered defeat in both 2022 and 2024, with the latter being DeBoer’s first journey to Knoxville. The 2022 game ended Alabama’s 16-year winning streak against Tennessee, as the Vols took home the win at the end of regulation.
