What’s going on with the hotel on Brooks Avenue?

GATES, N.Y. — For years, an abandoned property on Brooks Avenue has been one of the first things people see when they land at the airport in Rochester.

A viewer named Steve asked what is going on with the Brooks Avenue hotel on the east side of Interstate 390 in Gates, noting the exterior is in shambles with broken windows, curtains blowing in the wind and graffiti all over.

Gates Town Supervisor Cosmo Giunta said it won’t look like this much longer.

“It’s sad to see… you don’t want that in your town,” Giunta said.

The property was a Holiday Inn, a Ramada Hotel, and more recently the scene of multiple police investigations.

“When there was that shooting there we just started to come down on him, and he needed to comply with everything, which he didn’t, and finally we were able to kind of get him evicted and new ownership purchased the property and since then being vacant you know again an eyesore, there were issues with graffiti people coming in, breaking in,” Giunta said.

The hotel has been vacant for about 8 years. In 2022, News10NBC reported on a TikTok trend sending young explorers inside, resulting in several trespassing arrests and boosted security.

Giunta said a fresh start is in view for the property.

“We applied for a grant, for the restore New York grant and we were awarded up to 2 million dollars for the demolition of it, which was great, something more to entice a developer to say hey the town is behind you,” Giunta said.

Erie Materials, which supplies exterior building materials to contractors and families, confirmed that it closed on the site this month.

“I think they’re going to start in September then hopefully demo will be done by November-December timeframe. I know they want to get it completely cleaned up… and then start probably building by spring… all weather-permitting,” Giunta said.

The company moving in is based in Syracuse and has locations all over Western New York. The building that will replace the old hotel is more of a warehouse style building with a showroom that will be open to the public.

“I can’t wait to finally see something there… it’s just… you cringe a little bit,” Giunta said.

Erie Materials said the company has 400 employees across 10 branch locations.

The new warehouse will be 50,000 square feet, including a 13,000-square-foot showroom for the public. The company confirmed demolition of the old hotel will begin in September.

News10NBC’s Emily Putnam asked to see renderings of the new facility. The vice president said they’re still in the process of finalizing the design, so no renderings are available yet.
