Before Bruce Springsteen Was a Superstar, Dave Marsh Led an Academy Award-Winning Producer to Him ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Before Bruce Springsteen became a rock superstar, one music writer was already paying close attention.

Dave Marsh, who died Aug. 14 at 76, became known as one of the foremost chroniclers of 76-year-old Springsteen’s career. But his connection to “The Boss” began long before Springsteen was filling stadiums or appearing on the covers of Time and Newsweek.

Marsh was an editor at Creem when he became an early champion of Springsteen. In 1974, he was also the person who took fellow music writer Jon Landau to see Springsteen perform in Boston. That night would become a pivotal moment in Springsteen’s career.

Landau went on to write his famous review declaring, “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.”

The review helped draw widespread attention to the then-rising musician, and Landau soon became Springsteen’s manager and producer.

Marsh continued documenting Springsteen’s career as it took off.

He wrote about Springsteen for Rolling Stone, including a major feature about the singer’s 1978 tour. That year, Springsteen appeared on the magazine’s cover, a sign of just how far he had come since those early club performances.

Marsh eventually turned his close knowledge of Springsteen into his 1979 book Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story. He later wrote Glory Days, chronicling another crucial period in Springsteen’s rise, and remained closely connected to the singer’s career for decades.

The relationship between the writer and musician was unusually close. Marsh had access to Springsteen at a level few other rock journalists did, including spending time with him on the road and interviewing him extensively.

Springsteen’s transformation from a relatively obscure New Jersey musician into one of America’s biggest rock stars took years, but Marsh was there early, and helped tell the story as it happened.

And while Landau’s famous prediction became part of Springsteen mythology, Marsh’s contribution was different: he was one of the writers who recognized the significance of Springsteen before the rest of the mainstream music world caught up.
