Howland trustees approve resource officers, firefighter ...Middle East

HOWLAND — The Howland Local School District’s resource officers are returning, but at a slightly cheaper cost to the district.

Trustees at Wednesday’s meeting approved a pair of resource officer contracts with the district effective Sept. 8, 2026 through June 3, 2027.

The contracts total $106,355, with one costing $75,899 and the other costing $30,455.

Fiscal Officer Thomas Krispinsky noted that when officials add both of the contracts together, it will be cheaper than last year’s arrangement.

“The reason being, officer number two is not taking medical insurance, so the school district does not have to pay for that portion,” Krispinsky said. “So it’s about $5,000 less for the school this year than it was last year.”

On the fire department side, trustees approved hiring Adam Varner as a full-time firefighter and paramedic, effective Aug. 2, at a rate of $22.57 an hour.

Fire Chief Ray Pace noted his history with Varner as someone who grew up in Northern Ohio and growing up in the fire service together.

“Adam became a paramedic not too long ago, which he kind of switched his pathways and wanted to become a full-time firefighter paramedic,” Pace said. “So we’re really excited to have him here.”

Pace added that Varner, a lieutenant with the Hambden Fire Department in Geauga County, also brings “a lot of experience” from University Hospital’s Critical Care ground transport, too.

“Us being predominantly EMS, about 85% of our call volume is EMS, he brings a very high standard to our organization that we have set and want to uphold, and that’s what we look for,” Pace said.

In other action, trustees:

• Approved hiring Lucas Brill as a part-time firefighter, effective Aug. 16 at a rate of $17 per hour.

• Approved firefighter Nicholas Schreckengost’s resignation, effective July 20.

• Approved a five-year copy machine lease agreement between the township’s police department and Toshiba Financial, totaling $8,712.

• Accepted the awarded 2026-27 Ohio Department of Public Safety-Division of EMS-P1 Training and Equipment Grant for $3,389.

• Approved utilizing Compass Family and Community Services to provide an employee assistance program from Aug. 1 to July 31, 2027, for $1,800, with no increase from last year.
