ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A patient at Waterview Heights died Monday morning after falling from a third-floor window at the troubled nursing home.
Death from fall
Rochester Police say there is no indication of any criminal circumstances. Sources tell News10NBC the patient was in the psychiatric wing.
“Those windows are not made to be opened. How would this person. It’s just so sad. I don’t know that that’s very sketchy if you ask me,” Patricia Turpin said.
Turpin has lived across the street from Waterview for most of her life. Her mother stayed there about 10 years ago.
Yearslong troubles
The death comes less than a week after residents learned the nursing home lost its license and is set to close next week. News10NBC has been investigating Waterview Heights for years.
Several people we spoke with feel the warning signs for the closure have been there for years.
“When I went to visit [my mother], she didn’t even have a glass of water,” Turpin said. “I think my whole family, including my father, were traumatized about nursing homes because of that place.”
Cande Coon’s mother stayed at Waterview from January 2025 to February 2026. Coon believes the facility was responsible for her mother’s death.
“She called me and said that she was having a hard time breathing. We went to the nurse and asked the nurse if they could, you know, call an ambulance. And they basically told us no,” Coon said.
Coon says she called 911 herself. The fire department arrived but had trouble getting inside.
“They said it took them 15 minutes to get through the front door because there was nobody at the desk. They were able to walk right in, walk into my mother’s room. Talk to her, I would say for probably about like 15, 20 minutes. And not one single person came to see what was going on. And we had to basically initiate them taking my mother to the hospital. And from there she ended up in hospice and a short while later she passed,” Coon said.
Both women say the warning signs were there for years and are thrilled to see the facility being shut down.
“I know people lost their jobs and, okay. You can get another one, but we have loved ones that lost their lives and we can’t get those moments back,” Coon said.
Waterview was supposed to submit a plan to the state Department of Health about its closure, including where current residents will be placed. As of Monday, the DOH has not confirmed whether or not those plans were received.
