When Whitney Houston was recording one of her now-beloved songs, little did she know it would be extra special thanks to the surprise inclusion of her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown‘s vocals.
“I had her do that outside. Her mom ain’t even know she did that,” producer Wyclef Jean said of Brown’s voice featured in Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love” during an interview on a recent podcast episode of One54.
The famed producer went on to explain that while Houston was singing the song in the recording booth, her daughter, unprompted, said “Sing mommy!” and Jean decided to capture the moment.
“I looked at my engineer, and I was like, “Get the mic,'” he recalled. “And I said, ‘What did you just say, girl?’ She was like, ‘Sing, mommy,’ and then I had it recorded, and I saved it.”
Jean explained that he kept the moment a surprise and didn’t show Houston the final product, with her young daughter on it, until the song was finished.
“[She] was just cheek to cheek, you know?” he said of Houston’s reaction. “Because her whole existence is for her daughter. Her whole existence, her whole living…And then she hears her daughter on a record saying, ‘Sing, mommy.’ That’s all she lives for.”

The song, which was the title track for her fourth album, released in 1998, went on to peak at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in 2000, according to Billboard. The record, also included “It’s Not Right but It’s Okay,” which earned her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Other tracks on the album were “Heartbreak Hotel” and “When You Believe.”
At the time of recording the album Brown was around four or five years old, having been born in 1993.
Following Houston’s death in 2012 at age 48, Brown died in 2015 at the age of 22 due to lobar pneumonia. Similar to her mother, she was found immersed in a bathtub with drugs in her system, according to ABC News.
