The series, which stars Depp as the lovable alcoholic scoundrel Captain Jack Sparrow, has so far produced five films, with the most recent entry, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017.
Depp had, however, previously insisted that he would not return to the series.
Deadline also cites sources claiming that Jack Sparrow won’t be the main character this time around, and that the focus will be on a female heroine, played by Margot Robbie, with Sparrow as a side character.
"If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it," the producer told Entertainment Weekly. "It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know... We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
The part will mark Depp’s first major Hollywood role since his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. A seven-person jury reached a verdict in June 2022, with Depp winning all three counts of defamation. He was awarded $10.35 million in damages, while Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages after winning one of her counterclaims.
In 2020, it was announced that actress Margot Robbie had been cast as the lead in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which was set to be a separate instalment from a planned traditional franchise reboot, in which she wouldn't be starring.
Last year, Bruckheimer confirmed that Robbie is still attached in some capacity to the upcoming sixth instalment in the franchise. "She's still involved," he told The Wrap, adding: “We had two scripts at one point, and then one kinda dropped out, and then we kinda went on with the other one.”
Details about Robbie's potential character and her connection to Sparrow also remain unknown.
