A father of six was killed in an accident at the Cleveland Cliffs Burns Harbor steel plant in northwest Indiana, union officials said.
The United Steelworkers Union said the man, later identified as Jonathan Stepp, was operating a pot hauler on Thursday night at the plant when an accident occurred.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been released.
According to IUOE Local 150, Stepp was a second-generation operating engineer with the union.
“IUOE Local 150 is asking our members, friends, and supporters to stand with the family of Brother Jonathan Stepp,” the union said in a social media post, in part. “…Now is the time to show Jonathan’s children that they are not alone.”
An online fundraiser has been established to help support Stepp’s family.
Stepp was employed by Phoenix Services, a contractor at the Burns Harbor facility.
SunCoke Energy, the owner of Phoenix Services, released the following statement regarding the incident:
“Thursday night, we suffered the tragic loss of one of our employees at our Burns Harbor, Indiana operations. Our hearts are with his family, and we are supporting them and our team during this difficult time,” said Sharon Doyle manager of Investor Relations & Treasury. “The safety of our employees is our highest priority. We have been in contact with Indiana OSHA and are fully cooperating with the agency, local authorities, and emergency responders to investigate the incident.”
