As David and Victoria Beckham prepared to watch this week’s solar eclipse on the deck of their yacht in Portofino, they paused, and hugged.
This was no perfunctory embrace, performed grudgingly or quickly before getting on with something else. It was a proper tender moment, the kind often lacking between couples who have been together for almost three decades and are busy and distracted by life. Bodies pushed together, they held each other tightly.
It’s nothing new for the pair, who are regularly seen touching, cuddling and kissing in Instagram posts, paparazzi shots, and their various documentaries. They’ve been like this from their early days of dating in the nineties. A marriage and four kids later, and they are still at it. When it comes to PDA, Vic and Dave are very much on board.
Public displays of affection are an acquired taste, whether you’re a participant or merely a witness. We’ve probably all rolled our eyes at couples who constantly paw each other. It turns out, however, the Beckhams’ modus operandi is backed up by science.
A study revealed that PDAs are linked to greater relationship satisfaction, and even minor actions like holding hands can “help partners feel valued, emotionally secure and connected to each other”. This research was carried out on residents of Poland, Indonesia and Nepal, and continues, with the academics next set to examine PDAs in a larger group of people across nine countries, including the UK.
Posh and Becks appear to be proof of the findings so far, with 27 years of marriage under their designer belts, and 29 years together in all. Other celebrity PDA fans include as Aaron and Sam Taylor-Johnson, who were recently seen smooching at Wimbledon, and Kourtney Kardashian, whose husband Travis Barker licked her tongue while grabbing her bum on a red carpet this week. So should we all be taking a leaf out of their books?
Ignoring evidence both scientific and anecdotal seems like an unwise move, and yet, I’m going to. Call me a prude if you like, but public displays of affection turn my stomach. They’re forgivable in the first flush of love, and on that balcony after a royal wedding, but other than that, apart from innocent hand holding and a brief peck goodbye, they’re simply too much information. Get a room, for goodness sake.
Also, like those who post gushing tributes to their partners on social media, PDAs smack of trying too hard. Who exactly are you attempting to convince with this performative spectacle?
PDAs also indicate a massive lack of consideration for those around you, a selfishness, because they make it appear that you don’t care who you make uncomfortable.
There was once a couple infamous for PDAs in my friendship group. None of us ever wanted to be alone with them, because when the mood struck they would start snogging, with full groping and additional moans of pleasure.
It was bad enough in a group, but at least then you had people to make faces to. If you were on your own with them, it was excruciating. When they got going, it was like they were the only two people in the world – which would have been fine if they actually were, rather than just two of three people in a living room, having a cup of tea and a chat.
So you, sat there awkwardly, are suddenly an unconsenting voyeur at an x-rated event, unsure whether you should let yourself out and leave them to it or grin and bear it, perhaps leaving a Yelp review for the show afterwards.
Maybe one of us should have brought it up, explained how painful it was for bystanders, but it was hard to know how to broach it, so we never did. I do believe this thoughtlessness spoke to their characters though, and many years on, they’re no longer friends of ours. They’re also divorced.
So for those of us who are anti-PDA and proud, fret not – there are always exceptions to the rule.
