Shots fired at NIPSCO vehicle during power restoration efforts in Gary ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A NIPSCO vehicle was struck by gunfire on Friday night while utility crews worked to restore power in Gary, Indiana, prompting restoration efforts in the city to be temporarily paused, officials said.

Authorities didn’t immediately share information on where the gunshots were fired. In a statement following the incident, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton the Gary Police Department and the Indiana State Police were working with NIPSCO to provide protection for crews as restoration efforts continue.

“Let me be clear: this type of violence is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the City of Gary,” the mayor said, in part. “These crews are here for one reason-to help our residents and restore electricity to families who have already endured days without power.”

Melton said “we understand the deep frustration” of residents who remain without power, and additional resources are being brought to the table so crews can get back to work safely and restoration can continue.

The incident comes as thousands of residents entered a fifth day without power following Tuesday’s storms.

NIPSCO reported “unprecedented” damage to the power grid, with the utility company saying more than 300,000 customers were without power at the height of the outages.

By Saturday morning, the number of customers affected had fallen to 158,000. Gary reported the most outages of any community, with more than 33,000 people still in the dark as of late Saturday morning.

NIPSCO issued the below statement, in part, following the incident:

“…NIPSCO is aware of a serious incident overnight in Gary involving our crews supporting our ongoing storm restoration efforts. We are working closely with law enforcement and gathering additional information.

The safety of our employees, contractors and the communities we serve remains our highest priority. We are grateful that no injuries have been reported.  In response to this incident, storm restoration activities involving crews have been temporarily paused in the city of Gary while we work with law enforcement and evaluate appropriate security measures to ensure the safety of our responders...”
