The New York Times reports that Mary Heilmann, who was 67 years old when her first museum retrospective opened to rave reviews in 2007, died on Friday, August 14. She was 86.
The saying goes, “better late than never,” and Heilmann didn’t gain wide acclaim until her late 60s with her mastery of the “wobbly line,” as the Times puts it.
Her studio took to social media on Friday to announce the painter’s death, which was caused by “complications from a fall.”
“She is survived by her nieces, Ann Jaime and Chris Heilmann, and her nephew, John Heilmann Jr., and their families,” the caption of the studio’s recent Instagram post reads. “She was predeceased by her brother John and his wife Linda.”
The caption continues, in part, “Mary’s life was marked by dedication to her artistic practice, gratitude for her four decades of fellowship in AA/NA, devotion to legions of former art students and her delight in the natural world. She had a knack for forging an art of connection – communal, intimate, and local. Now she has embarked on the final journey that, in her words, truly has no linear time’.”
