CHILI, N.Y. — A busy intersection closure in Chili is causing major inconvenience and safety concerns as some drivers ignore detour signs and travel the wrong way to avoid longer routes.
The intersection near Byrne Dairy on Union Street and Chili Avenue has been down to one lane with one-way traffic since June 26. News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic found that the construction has led to multiple detours, but some drivers are not following the posted signs.
What residents are saying
Jim O’Keefe, a Chili resident for nearly 50 years, said he learned about the problems through a Facebook group called Residents of North Chili. He said people have been posting their concerns about drivers going the wrong way down the one-way street.
“People decided, well, they can go the wrong way down the one-way street and people were getting really irritated about that,” O’Keefe said. “And some of the comments were saying that people wouldn’t even back up going the wrong way.”
O’Keefe said residents who live down the affected road can only come home from work by going around a three-mile detour. He said the biggest complaint has been about people leaving Byrne Dairy and ignoring the traffic restrictions.
The consequences of driving wrong way in work zones
If drivers go the wrong way in a work zone and cause a crash or damage to their car, most insurance companies may not cover it. The state Department of Transportation said law enforcement is issuing tickets to drivers who ignore the traffic signs.
Businesses in the plaza near the construction told Badzic they have lost at least 60% of customers since the start of the project, but they understand it needed to be done. O’Keefe also raised concerns about the detours with school starting soon.
The DOT said it has not received any official complaints about wrong-way driving. Barring extreme weather, the department expects the road to reopen by the end of the month.
