ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester’s ban on gatherings of 10 or more people in public between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. has been extended to at least Sunday – with more extensions possible.
The restrictions come almost two weeks after a streak of shootings left two people dead and eight others wounded. The City is also focusing on community building through events aimed at increasing public safety.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski went to a free community barbecue and cleanup event on Avenue D and Conkey Avenue, not far from the scene of one of the deadly shootings. The event aimed to bring the community together and minimize violence.
Neighbors said they like the restrictions Mayor Malik Evans put in place in late July.
“Yeah, I feel everything has been calmer since the curfew has been in place,” said Kerax Bugatti, a neighbor.
“The curfew stuff is really doing a lot,” said Nate G, another neighbor.
“A lot of youth, you know, running around, certain times of the night,” said Antonio Clark, who also lives in the neighborhood. “You know, I’m part of youth that have been here before, getting in trouble late night. You know, nobody looking over you, so it’s important to a certain degree.”
But others like Stephanie Brown said there needs to be stricter enforcement for the curfew to be impactful.
“It affected a few people, but I mean, they still gonna be outside. So I feel, [there’s] not really anything the city could do. I feel like it’s parents too.”
Beyond the gathering restrictions, the City’s Pathways for Peace program has partnered with the nonprofit Walking for Rochester to organize community cleanups in several parts of the city, plus free barbecue.
“Pathway’s mission is to reduce violence and to engage with our community as best as we can. And this is one of the ways we do it,” Dixon said.
Pathways for Peace provides resources like conflict mediation, crisis response and youth engagement to minimize violence in the community. Coordinator Anthony Dixon said events like this are important to establish connections and hopefully prevent future violence.
“The more that y’all see us outside, the more that y’all can engage with us, the more we can help to kind of reduce violence here in the community,” Dixon said.
Neighbors said they want to see more outreach events like the cleanup and barbecue, plus more police.
“Keep doing [events like this], and add more stuff,” said a neighbor named Chris.
“Just keeping the guns off the streets, the weapons, you know, all of the assaults,” said Terrell Black, a longtime neighborhood advocate.
“More police officers in the streets and around the city. That’s what I think,” said Jeddarion Patterson, who also lives in the neighborhood.
There is still no word on any arrests from either of those deadly shootings.
Pathways for Peace plans to hold two more community barbecue/cleanup events, one on August 20th at W. Main and Henion St.; and one on August 27th at Genesee St. and Orleans St.; both from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
It also plans to host a community softball game on August 28th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a location to be announced on it’s website.
