More heavy rain was expected across the Chicago area as the work week wraps up, with severe storm chances looming Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The severe weather risk comes days after at least five confirmed tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area during a destructive derecho.
“We’re keeping an eye on another thunderstorm complex out to the west,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said Thursday morning. “Waiting in the wings.”
Early Thursday morning, a dense fog advisory was in effect for many parts of the Chicago area to the west and south. A flood watch and river flood warning was also in effect, with more rain to come.
“Unfortunately, it looks like the heaviest rain will be in our southern communities again,” Sack said.
Thursday storms
Widespread rain will move into the Chicago area starting about 11 a.m. Sack said, with the heaviest rain in the far western part of the state. By about 1 p.m., heavy rain and thunderstorms will move east, with radar showing strong storms possible through Ottawa, Kankakee and into northwest Indiana.
“We’ll keep the rain around for the afternoon commute,” Sack said. “Unfortunately, it looks like the southern suburbs will be hit once again with the heaviest rains, if not the gustiest winds.”
For Thursday’s storms, the Storm Prediction Center has placed areas to the far south and west under a “slight” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level two of five. Other parts of the Chicago area, including DeKalb, Aurora, Romeoville, Morris and Kankakee, will be under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one.
In those parts, damaging winds up to 60 mph, hail and heavy downpours were all possible.
“And then to our south, there is a slight tornado risk as well,” Sack said.
Thursday night will stay rainy, Sack said, with a band of thunderstorms “draping” their way across the Chicago area through early Friday morning.
“Once again, mainly in the southern suburbs,” Sack said.
Friday storms
By 9 a.m., widespread rain was still in the forecast, Sack said. Around lunchtime, the rain will clear out, with the chance for another isolated storm possible in the afternoon.
Through 6 p.m. Friday, rain totals could top three inches in parts to the south. According to the Storm Prediction Center, a large part of the Chicago area will be under a “slight” risk of marginal weather Friday, with the far northern suburbs left out.
Saturday storms
Friday night into Saturday will see another round of storms coming, Sack said, with widespread to scattered rain on Saturday morning through at least 11 a.m.
At that time, the entire Chicago area will be under a marginal risk of severe weather, with 60 mph winds, large hail and more downpours possible.
The rain will wind its way out through the early afternoon time, Sack said. Sunday, more showers and storms were expected.
