Just 12 months ago, Sjostrom gave birth to her first child, Adrian with her partner Johan de Jong Skierus.
With the win, the 32-year-old Swedish legend collected her 18th career gold medal at the long course European Championships, tying German star Franziska van Almsick for the most European Championship golds ever won by a woman. Sjostrom has a chance to take sole possession of the record later in the meet with a win in the 50 freestyle. While she is the favorite, that race could still provide a tough challenge. She will face a loaded field that includes Sara Curtis and Marrit Steenbergen, both of whom have since established themselves as world-record holders.
Sjostrom’s European Championship resume dates all the way back to 2008, when she made her first appearance at the meet at just 14 years old. She immediately established herself as a star, winning the 100 butterfly in 58.44 to claim her first European title and first international senior medal. Another defining moment of her European Championship career came ten years later in 2018, when she produced one of the most impressive sprint campaigns in meet history. Sjostrom won all four individual sprint events — the 50/100 free and 50/100 fly — becoming the first woman to complete that double-double at the European Championships.
Her medal haul is also distinguished by how much of it has come individually. Sixteen of Sjostrom’s 18 European Championship golds have been individual titles, with her other two coming in relays. Van Almsick, by comparison, collected seven individual European titles during her career.

Popov’s record of 26 total medals stood for 18 years before Sjostrom surpassed it in 2022, and she has only widened the gap.
With her latest 50 butterfly victory, Sjostrom now owns 29 European Championship medals overall — 18 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze. That puts her three medals clear of Popov’s 26 and makes her the winningest swimmer at the championships regardless of gender. Popov, however, still holds the record for the most gold medals, with 21, meaning Sjostrom’s potential 50 freestyle victory would move her to 19 and leave her just two titles shy of overall crown.
