Day three of the 2026 European Swimming Championships started off with a bang, as we saw six swimmers clear the 1:57 barrier in the women’s 200m freestyle in tonight’s semi-finals.

Among them was 16-year-old Ieva Jurkunaite of Lithuania, who re-wrote her lifetime best and national record registered just this morning en route to capturing the 2nd seed behind leader and defending gold medalist Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic who nabbed 1:55.77.

During the heats, Jurkunaite logged a swift time of 1:57.28 to stake her claim on the event. That marked the first time Jurkunaite had delved under the 1:58 barrier, hacking over a second off her former PB and national benchmark of 1:58.62 notched this past April at the Lithuanian Championships.

Flash forward to this evening, however, as the multiple European Junior Championships relay medalist busted out an even speedier mark of 1:56.90 to break another barrier. That rendered her as the 6th seed for tomorrow night’s main event.

Comparing her morning and evening performances, Jurkunaite saved a little more on the back half, hitting a 29-point on the final 50m to deliver her new achievement.

Jurkunaite’s New LTU NR – 1:56.90 Jurkunaite’s Old LTU NR – 1:57.28 27.12 26.96 29.38 (56.50) 29.52 (56.48) 30.54 30.31 29.86 30.49

For perspective, Jurkunaite’s 1:56.90 outing would rank her as the 6th-best American 16-year-old girl performer of all time.

This 2free represents Jurkunaite’s second national record. She set the 400m free record of 4:15.53 at the aforementioned Lithuanian Championships this year.

Also of note during tonight’s semi-finals is the fact that both the Belgian and the Portuguese national records also bit the dust.

Sarah Dumont lowered Valentine Dumont‘s Belgian standard of 1:57.19 down to a mighty 1:56.52 to get beneath the 1:57 barrier on just her second occasion ever. She split 27.97/29.41 (57.38)/29.81/29.33 to capture the 5th seed for tomorrow night’s medal-contending affair.

For Portugal, Francisca Martins turned in a time of 1:57.56 to slice .29 off her own former benchmark of 1:57.85 set at last year’s World University Games. Splits included 27.47/29.55 (57.02)/30.21/30.33.

However, Martins’ time tied that of Leah Schlosshan of Great Britain for 8th place, meaning, barring a scratch, a swim-off will take place for the final slot.
