Several schools in the Chicago area were closed Wednesday after catastrophic storms left some buildings damaged and many without power.
Meanwhile, others are rushing to clean up debris and racing to recover in time for students to return for their new school year.
Just days before students are set to move back in, a south suburban school is racing to recover from possible tornado damage.
Glenwood Academy said its school was damaged as storms tore through its campus Tuesday.
“Today, our campus was hit by an EF2 tornado – marking the second major storm to strike Glenwood Academy in just two weeks,” the school wrote on social media. “While we are immensely grateful that no students were on campus, the physical damage is extensive.”
The school is seeking donations and volunteers to help clean-up and rebuild in time for students’ return next week.
“The unexpected costs of back-to-back severe storms are substantial. Every contribution helps us rebuild faster,” the school said.
Several other schools in the Chicago area were closed due to storm damage Wednesday, many in Indiana.
That includes Gary Community School Corporation, School Town of Munster, Portage Township, and Duneland School Corporation.
Bloom Township District 206 in Chicago switched its first day back to school to an e-learning day “due to the severe storms in our area.” The school is expected to reopen Thursday.
The School City of Hobart canceled its first day of school Wednesday to “allow us to safely assess and secure our school buildings for safe return.”
The Crown Point Community School Corporation canceled school Wednesday saying multiple buildings were without power and “several trees are down on our properties or on the roads to access our schools.”
“Based on updates from service providers and emergency agencies, we do not know whether power and access will be restored by tomorrow morning. We also recognize that many families are dealing with storm damage and power outages at home,” the school wrote on social media. “We will continue assessing our buildings throughout the day tomorrow and will share updates as they become available, including information about whether open houses are rescheduled.”
Valparaiso Community Schools said due to “severe storm and power outages,” there will be no school Wednesday.
At the same time, many are bracing for another round of potentially severe storms Wednesday.
