Born November 28, 1757, in London, Blake was an engraver, artist, and poet. He created enduring works like Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, The Tyger, The Lamb, and London. Although he would eventually be recognized as one of the great poets and visual artists of the Romantic era, Blake received little recognition during much of his lifetime.
His spiritual life was equally important to his work. Blake described having visions from childhood and believed deeply in the power of imagination. In 1787, his beloved younger brother Robert died at 19 from tuberculosis. Robert had been living with William and his wife, Catherine, and his death profoundly affected Blake.
Blake died in London on Aug. 12, 1827, at age 69. The anniversary of his death offers an opportunity to revisit the words of a poet who found ways to connect the visible world with something much larger and more enduring.
