In a new interview with Guitar Player, Bachman called "Takin' Care of Business" his "gift from the songwriting gods."
"I was trying to write a song like the Beatles’ ‘Paperback Writer’ — a day in the life of a guy — rather than write a love song," Bachman continued. "In fact, I was actually writing about Stanley Greenberg, who was the son of Florence Greenberg, who owned Scepter Records. She managed the Shirelles and Dionne Warwick, and she wrote ’Soldier Boy.’"
"And every day coming to work, he would wear a white button-down shirt, a tweed tie, tweed jacket, tweed pants and brogue shoes," Bachman recalled. "And this is in August in New York, when it’s 95 above and 95 humidity! We’re wearing ripped shirts, cut-off pants, ripped jeans and clogs, and he’s coming to work in a suit. We’d ask, ‘Stanley, why are you dressed this way? It’s so hot out there!’ He’d say, ‘I want to look like George Martin. I know this is what he wears.’"
Before "White Collar Man" turned into "Takin' Care of Business," it sounded quite a bit different.
The Guess Who never recorded "White Collar Man," which turned out to be a lucky thing a few years later for Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Once at the gig, Bachman learned that lead singer C.F. Turner had lost his voice and it was up to him to sing the last set. Because Bachman wasn't generally a singer, his repertoire was somewhat limited, and he wasn't sure what to play.
The band started singing along by the next chorus, so Bachman answered them with "Every day!" and "Every way!"
He was right, of course. "Takin' Care of Business" was released as a single from Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, in January 1974, eventually peaking at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August and spending 20 weeks on the chart overall.
