Returning with his guitar, Cohen played a few of the songs he’d recently written, with Collins immediately hearing something special in “Suzanne” and “Dress Rehearsal Rag,” both of which she ended up recording for her 1966 album, In My Life. But it was “Suzanne” that would really become a catalyst for both musicians.
Following all this newfound exposure brought on by Collins singing his songs, Cohen found the confidence he needed to launch a music career. “He finished Suzanne, and the audience went wild. He has been giving concerts ever since,” Collins said.
In 1967, Collins, who had already established herself as a worthy singer-songwriter, would find meteoric success with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s "Both Sides Now.” The song became a Top 10 hit in 1968 and even won her a Grammy for Best Folk Performance in 1969.
“He was generous to a fault,” Collins toldThe Telegraph in 2020 of her friend. “One of the most interesting people I ever knew, and a gentleman on all scores. … I have always been grateful that I did not fall in love with Leonard in the way that I fell in love with his songs.”
