“Nickelodeon wasn’t as well known at the time. The brand was kind of a mix of You Can’t Do That on Television and Nick-at-Nite was around at that point," O'Malley shared with PEOPLE. "I wasn’t watching Nickelodeon because I was in high school and college at that point, but I did take the job. I thought, ‘This will be great.’”

What happened to Nickelodeon GUTS?
The game show was briefly revived by Nickelodeon in the late 2000s as the family-focused spinoff My Family's Got GUTS, which aired for a single season in September 2008, though O'Malley did not return as host. Following the end of the original GUTS, O'Malley moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

He memorably starred as Jimmy Hughs on the CBS series Yes, Dear from 2000 to 2006, and also was a series regular as Burt Hummel, father to Chris Colfer's Kurt, on the popular FOX series Glee; the latter performance earned O'Malley an Emmy Award nomination. He also created, wrote and executive-produced the short-lived NBC comedy Extended Family, starring Jon Cryer, Donald Faison and Abigail Spencer. On the big screen, O'Malley last appeared in the 2025 titles Eenie Meanie and After All.
