PENFIELD, N.Y. — A new app is making it easier to find farm stands, bakeries and community pantries in your area.
How it started
“Stands By Me” was created by Brent Bivona, who came up with the idea during a bike ride. Bivona said he’d been discovering local growers, makers and bakers while cycling and started marking them on a map.
“I did a u-turn on my bike and I said, ‘whoa, they got fresh sourdough. That’s pretty cool.’ I tucked it like a football and I rode home and called everyone,” Bivona said.
He realized there needed to be a better way to share these locations.
“And I’m like, there’s got to be an app or it’s got to be some way to make this better. And that’s where Stands By Me came from,” Bivona said.
How it works
Vendors can list their stand for free. If they want to show more than one available item, they can pay $7 a month for a standard plan and $15 if they want even more options.
Roseann Durgin owns Rosie’s Cart, a local stand that sells firewood, award-winning cookies and lavender. Her cart is open 24/7.
“I saw it on Facebook and a couple other local farm stands were joining and so I decided this is great. So I added myself to it and put in our hours,” Durgin said.
She said the app gives her business another way to reach customers online. The more search results a business appears in, the more people will stop by, Durgin said.
Why people shop local
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with shoppers at Bauman’s farm stand in Penfield about why they prefer to shop local. Elaine Evans said freshness is the main reason.
“Because you know exactly where it’s coming from and that’s what I like and the prices are good,” Evans said.
Gary Richardson said he’s always bought corn and plants at Bauman’s.
“I’ve always bought corn here and I buy my plants here and especially now since they had their problem i certainly wouldn’t buy anywhere else,” Richardson said.
Some shoppers also mentioned recent produce recalls and the Cyclospora outbreak as reasons they want to know where their food comes from.
More about the app
The app shows vendor hours, addresses and if vendors pay for it, real-time listings of what’s still in stock at that stand.
“Stands By Me” started in the Finger Lakes region. During the testing phase, it saw increased interest across the country and now includes stands in 31 states and Canada.
