A line of storms making its way toward Illinois Tuesday morning could become dangerous for many, but one thing could shift the forecast.
That thing is whether or not the storms form an organized line as they reach northern Illinois and the Chicago area.
“A strengthening low level jet will lead to the risk of gusts up to 80 mph if storms organize into a line,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said. “It’s yet to be seen if we’ll get one big line of widespread wind damage, or if smaller storm cells will keep the winds more isolated. Either way be prepared for potential power outages.”
As of 6:30 a.m., the line looked to be scattered, which means “you could still have some damaging gusts, but not as widespread.”
The window of potentially severe weather sits between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to Jeanes.
“Right around lunch hour, you need to make sure you have a way to receive alerts. And if you have outdoor plans, then just be sure that you’re paying attention to what’s going on,” he said.
Much of the Chicago area sits under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, a level three out of five, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Wind gusts could reach as high as 80 mph, with hail, flash flooding and the possibility of short-lived tornadoes also threatening the area.
Heavy rain could impact areas already inundated by previous precipitation, leading to more flooding of streams, creeks and roadways across the region.
The National Weather Service said the thunderstorms have the potential to develop into an “intense, fast-moving line.”
