An “intense line of storms” moving toward Illinois from Iowa could bring “destructive” wind gusts, brief tornadoes and possibly even hail to the Chicago area Tuesday.
Overnight storms brought severe weather alerts to parts of the area during the early morning hours, but a second line moving in looks to be the bigger threat.
The window of potentially severe weather sits between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes.
“Right around lunch hour, you need to make sure you have a way to receive alerts. And if you have outdoor plans, then just be sure that you’re paying attention to what’s going on,” Jeanes said.
Much of the Chicago area sits under an “enhanced” risk of severe weather, a level three out of five, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Wind gusts could reach as high as 80 mph, with hail, flash flooding and the possibility of short-lived tornadoes also threatening the area.
Heavy rain could impact areas already inundated by previous precipitation, leading to more flooding of streams, creeks and roadways across the region.
The National Weather Service said the thunderstorms have the potential to develop into an “intense, fast-moving line.”
The storms are expected to clear during the afternoon rush hour, leaving the rest of Tuesday evening much quieter.
That is, until another chance for thunderstorms and potentially severe weather arrives Wednesday.
Most of the region will be at a “marginal” risk of severe weather on Wednesday, and more storms could occur Thursday before the threat transitions to one of scattered showers for the remainder of the week and into the weekend.
High temperatures will also dip a bit below their seasonal averages, with readings in the 70s expected for most of the back half of the week according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
