ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than 6,000 citations were issued to drivers who illegally passed stopped school buses during the 2025-26 school year, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced Monday.
The citations were issued as part of the county’s School Bus Safety Program. The program equips school buses with stop-arm cameras to capture and enforce violations when drivers illegally pass stopped school buses with extended stop-arms and flashing red lights.
Greece Central School District had the most citations issued this past school year, with over 2,300 citations issued. The Webster Central School District was second with 780 citations issued.
During the 2025-26 school year, Brighton, Fairport, Pittsford, Spencerport, and West Irondequoit school districts joined the program. These districts joined East Irondequoit, Greece, Hilton, Monroe #1 BOCES, and Webster school districts.
The City of Rochester and the Rochester Central District School Board have their own school bus safety program that started in November.
The program in Rochester started issuing fines to drivers in January. First-time offenders face a $250 fine, with escalating penalties for second and third offenses.
