While the window for potentially severe storms extends for more than 12 hours Monday, there’s a smaller timeframe where the biggest threats sit, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Though timing remains subject to change as the system moves into the Chicago area, the largest threats will come during the late afternoon and evening hours.
As of Monday morning, that window of time extended from 4 p.m. through at least 10 p.m., though potentially severe conditions could continue closer to midnight.
Overnight storms are expected, bringing threats for heavy downpours and flooding, but the more severe winds, hail and possibly even tornado threats could diminish before the early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service, storms could begin moving into parts of the region at 3 p.m., with a swath of the region stretching from the city to the north and northwest suburbs, along with some western and southern suburbs situated under the “highest coverage” region.
According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack, “all the threats are on the table.”
That includes damaging winds and hail, but “a threat for tornadoes cannot be ruled out,” according to the NWS.
The storms will also be capable of producing lightning strikes, soaking downpours and gusty winds.
“Like [Sunday], some storms will likely be severe and may also result in flash flooding,” the National Weather Service warned.
Much the area is under the slight risk for severe weather, a level two out of five.

After Monday’s storms come to an end, the threat won’t be over for the Chicago area. Another round is slated to move in Tuesday, this one potentially even more severe.
“On Tuesday, here we go again. By noon, you could see another wave of thunderstorms approaching. So we’ll see showers and storms as we go into Tuesday afternoon. We’re going to be looking at again the threat for some severe weather with those storms,” Sack said, noting the system tomorrow could turn into a “significant wind event.”
The NWS reported this round could “develop into an organized line or bow capable producing destructive winds, but it is not yet certain whether this will occur in our area.”
The exact coverage area and intensity of Tuesday’s storms also remains unclear.
