26-year-old Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands put another stamp on the women’s 100m freestyle, rewriting the Championship Record she put on the books out of the heats with another head-turning performance this evening in the semi-finals.

This morning, current World Record holder Steenbergen put up a feisty swim of 52.62, a mark which shaved .05 off Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden’s former meet benchmark of 52.67 both in 2014 and in 2018.

Steenbergen’s morning outing consisted of a 25.12 opener and a 27.50 back half to claim the top seed for this evening.

During the semi-finals, Steenbergen went even quicker, delivering a time of 52.44 to hold just under a half-second advantage over the rest of the field. The next-closest competitor and only other woman to clear the 53-secomd barrier was Italian national record holder Sara Curtis who touched in 52.93.

Steenbergen’s performances here are inching closer to her lifetime best from June when she broke the world record in 51.68 at the 2026 Sette Colli Trophy. That occasion also saw her take down a Sjostrom-owned record, as the Swedish swimmer was the previous world record holder in the event.

Split Comparison

In addition to the 100 free, Steenbergen is set to race the 50 free, 200 free, 50 back and 100 back over the course of the competition in Paris.

Of note, Spanish swimmer Maria Daza turned in a time of 53.97 to finish 13th after tonight’s semi-finals. That represents a new lifetime best and national record, deleting the former Spanish standard of 54.01 she clocked just this past March at the Spanish Open Championships.

Tonight Daza opened in 26.09 and brought it home in 27.88 to become the first woman ever from her nation to clear the 54-second barrier in the event.
