RIYADH — The Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) will participates in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) to enhance regional cooperation in combating desertification. The Secretariat-General of MGI (MGI) will participate in COP17 — taking place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 17 to 28 — showcase the initiative’s efforts to combat desertification, restore degraded land, and strengthen regional environmental cooperation. During its first participation in the conference, the initiative will highlight the efforts of its 35 regional member countries to address desertification, land degradation, and climate change and translate environmental targets into practical programs and projects. Among its key targets is planting approximately 50 billion trees, equivalent to restoring 200 million hectares of degraded land across member countries. The initiative will focus on strengthening its partnerships with the UNCCD and relevant regional and international organizations. It will also showcase applicable regional and nature-based solutions for rehabilitating degraded land, expanding vegetation cover, combating desertification, and mitigating the effects of climate change on communities and ecosystems. Middle East Green Initiative Secretary-General Eng. Ibrahim Al-Turki said the initiative’s first participation in UNCCD COP17 represents an important opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of its regional member countries to strengthening efforts to restore degraded land and combat desertification across the region. He explained that these efforts represent a shared regional and international responsibility and are a key pillar in advancing action on global climate issues, supporting sustainable development, and protecting the future of communities across the region. He noted that cooperation, effective partnerships, and action grounded in science and knowledge can help transform shared challenges into opportunities for lasting impact. Through its participation in the conference, the initiative seeks to strengthen dialogue with regional and non-regional countries, international organizations, financial and scientific institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations. The aim is to build practical partnerships that support the implementation of projects and activities with environmental, social, and economic impact. The MGI — a regional alliance launched by Saudi Arabia — aims to combat land degradation, contribute to international efforts to address climate change, restore degraded land, preserve vegetation cover across its regional member countries, and support cooperation among members and partners in capacity building, knowledge exchange, mobilizing technical and financial support, and developing applicable regional solutions.
