The Chicago area will once again see a threat for severe weather Monday, bringing the potential for damaging winds, hail and possibly even a tornadoes in the latest of multiple rounds of storms set to hit the region this week.
The window for the potentially severe storms is a larger one, with the threat continuing for hours and even overnight.
Here’s a look at what to expect and when:
Storm timing
The next threat moves in Monday afternoon and continues through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service, storms could begin moving into parts of the region at 3 p.m. The threat will continue, however, until 5 a.m. Tuesday.
“7 p.m. still looking at storms moving their way on, through and into the midnight timeframe as well,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said Monday morning. “Some of these could be locally heavy downpours as well.”
Biggest threats
According to Sack, “all the threats are on the table.”
That includes damaging winds and hail but “a threat for tornadoes cannot be ruled out,” according to the NWS.
The storms will also be capable of producing lightning strikes, soaking downpours and gusty winds.
“Like yesterday, some storms will likely be severe and may also result in flash flooding,” the National Weather Service warned.
Much the area is under the slight risk for severe weather, a level two out of five.
More storms this week
The threat is expected to continue overnight before another round of storms moves in again Tuesday, this one potentially even more severe.
“On Tuesday, here we go again. By noon, you could see another wave of thunderstorms approaching. So we’ll see showers and storms as we go into Tuesday afternoon. We’re going to be looking at again the threat for some severe weather with those storms,” Sack said, noting the “severe risk for tomorrow looking very similar to today.”
The NWS reported this round could “develop into an organized line or bow capable producing destructive winds, but it is not yet certain whether this will occur in our area.”
The exact coverage area and intensity of the storms also remains unclear.
“The stormy pattern will continue through at least mid-week with additional severe storms and instances of flooding possible beyond Tuesday,” the NWS reported.
Sack agreed, noting additional chances even heading into next weekend.
“And unfortunately the threat of rain will be around off and on as we go into the weekend as well, with chances of showers Friday into Saturday and Sunday,” Sack said.
