Veteran catcher Andrew Knizner is a free agent after opting out of his contract with the Red Sox, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The 31-year-old will be seeking his fourth organization this season.
Knizner came to Boston on a minor league deal near the end of June. He played well at Triple-A Worcester, posting a 141 wRC+ with more walks than strikeouts across 21 games. The performance continued a strong campaign at the highest minor league level for Knizner. He slashed .279/.371/.590 in 33 games for Albuquerque before being released from the Rockies’ organization in June. He likely triggered an opt-out in that situation as well.
The well-traveled Knizner began the year with the Mariners after getting designated for assignment by the Giants in the offseason. The backstop had a .598 OPS in 33 games with San Francisco in 2025. It was his third MLB team in three years. The majority of Knizner’s big-league action has come with the Cardinals. He also spent a season with the Rangers.
Knizner has a decent chance to latch on somewhere else given he’s received plenty of interest for his services this year. The solid output in the minors also helps his chances of finding another home. Knizner has never hit much as a big leaguer, with a career 68 wRC+, but he did pop 10 home runs in 241 plate appearances with the Cardinals in 2023. He has a dozen homers in just 234 minor league plate appearances this season.
Boston seemed like a destination for Knizner to see an opportunity in the majors. A group of catchers led by Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong has combined for a .636 OPS this season, a bottom-10 mark in the league. That changed at the trade deadline, though. The Red Sox swung a blockbuster deal with the division-rival Orioles to land catcher Adley Rutschman. Narvaez went out in the trade, and veteran catcher Jake Rogers came back.
Rutschman is currently on the injured list with wrist inflammation. It’s his third stint on the IL this year, but he could be nearing a debut in Boston. The three-time All-Star began a rehab assignment today with Worcester. Rutschman went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI in his first WooSox game. He also threw out a runner attempting to swipe second base.
It’s unclear how many games Rutschman will need at Triple-A to get up to speed. He went down with the wrist injury in mid-July. His previous IL stints, for ankle inflammation and a concussion, respectively, didn’t require rehab assignments. Rutschman was behind the plate for Worcester, a good sign that his left wrist is ready to handle the rigors of the position.
A torrid stretch from the Red Sox has given them a 6 1/2 game lead for a Wild Card spot in the AL heading into the weekend. Boston had won nine in a row heading into Saturday’s matchup against the Athletics. The club is no longer in a position where Rutschman needs to be rushed back. Wong and Rogers are handling the catching duties for now.
