The White Sox are in agreement with outfielder Joey Wiemer on a minor league contract, relays Brooke Fletcher of Chicago Sports Network. He’ll report to Triple-A Charlotte as non-roster depth.
Wiemer was released by the Nationals on Wednesday. The 27-year-old had been in Triple-A on an optional assignment since the middle of May. Wiemer was having a miserable minor league season, batting .196/.277/.257 with one home run across 166 plate appearances. It was a sharp fall from his historic start to the MLB season, when he tied the big league record by reaching base in his first 10 plate appearances and homered in each of his first two games.
After collecting multiple hits in four of the first five contests, Wiemer had a total of 10 hits in his next 23 games. He’s now a career .216/.296/.380 hitter in 582 plate appearances over parts of four seasons. Wiemer garnered some acclaim as a prospect for his combination of plus raw power and speed in a 6’4″ frame. He has premium physical tools but has always had trouble adjusting to secondary stuff and whiffs far too often. He has fanned at a 31% clip in the big leagues at a 26% rate in Triple-A, where he’s a .221/.326/.351 hitter in more than 1000 plate appearances.
The White Sox lost some outfield depth when St. Louis claimed Everson Pereira off waivers on Thursday. Junior Perez and Rikuu Nishida are still on the 40-man roster and on optional assignment to Charlotte. Wiemer has more big league experience than either and provides extra right-handed depth.
