GATES, N.Y. — Some viewers with landline phones are starting to get warned that the old system is ending. Digital will replace the copper wire lines.
The sound of that ring for Nancy LaMonica is the sound of safety. LaMonica has lived in her apartment since the 1980s and has had the same landline number ever since.
On Thursday, LaMonica says a Verizon representative told her on the phone that her landline is getting discontinued and that a notice is coming.
Chief Investigator Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “What does having that phone mean to you?”
LaMonica: “Security. A connection to the outside world. This is my lifeline.”
Brean: “Your landline is your lifeline.”
LaMonica: “It most certainly is.”
A federal decision in 2019 lets the major carriers, including Verizon, phase out old copper wire landlines and replace them with new technology. Verizon says it has not sent official notice in our area. In a statement sent to News10NBC, Verizon said the following:
“Verizon has not yet issued notifications to customers in New York regarding the transition away from our legacy copper network. If and when this transition occurs, Verizon is committed to ensuring a seamless experience by providing reliable alternatives—including ultra-fast Fiber where available or VoiceConnect, a wireless-powered solution that works with existing home phones, includes battery backup for power outages, supports E911, and retains existing phone numbers. Legacy copper voice service will not be discontinued for any customer until a suitable replacement is available.“
But when change comes, it will be “seamless” and “reliable” including “battery backup for power outages.”
LaMonica lost her husband four years ago. She lives alone and relies on her phones, even the old rotary one that still works. The voice quality on that phone is “beautiful,” LaMonica said.
There’s a condition called nomophobia, the stress of missing your cell phone. That’s what LaMonica feels, except her phone has been hard wired in her home for decades.
Brean: “And that causes you to feel what?”
LaMonica: “Fear and fright. Anxiety. Stress. Absolute like my world is falling apart because my phone is my lifeline.”
A study shows that nearly 40% of adults in New York have landlines. That is the highest percentage of any state in the country.
Nearly 80% of households in America are wireless. But here in New York, 6.1 million New York adults still have landlines.
