The newly released pictures show Julie Hesmondhalgh, Helena Wilson, Ellie McKay, Liv Andrusier and Lizzie Back – seen for the first time on set – with the actors posing alongside a clapperboard.

Hesmondhalgh, best known for playing Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street as well as roles in Broadchurch, Happy Valley and Mr Bates vs The Post Office, appears as Sister Alice, while Wilson takes on a young Sister Julienne.

McKay plays Olive Dobbs, Andrusier plays Marianne Siegler and Back plays Sybil Maxted, the three secular midwives who complete the team.

The wider cast includes Amy Booth-Steel as Sister Evangelina and Helen Schlesinger as Sister Monica Joan.

"Together with Sister Alice, and local GP Dr Kit, the nuns dedicate their lives to mothers, babies and those in need. But there is no gas and air, no penicillin, no cure for TB, and no welfare state.

"Then war is declared – and life gets even harder."
