Imaging on Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage‘s left knee revealed a meniscus issue, per Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Yesavage will head to Texas on Monday to visit a specialist. The righty was placed on the injured list Wednesday for what was initially labeled left knee inflammation. It appears the injury could be more serious now that the club has the MRI results.
“[Surgery] is always a possibility,” manager John Schneider told reporters after sharing that Yesavage would see a specialist (h/t Shi Davidi of Sportsnet). “We’re obviously hoping to avoid that.”
Yesavage was pulled from Tuesday’s outing in Houston after just two innings. He walked off the field in discomfort after warming up before the third inning. The injury hadn’t affected his performance up to that point, as he’d set down six straight Astros after a leadoff walk to open the game.
After emerging as a key cog in Toronto’s run to the 2025 World Series, Yesavage was delayed in the spring due to a shoulder injury. He ultimately opened the year on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement. The young righty returned at the end of April and delivered solid results. Yesavage has a 3.65 ERA supported by a 3.36 xERA across 18 starts. He has an unsightly 11.9% walk rate, but has limited opponents to a .180 batting average. The hit suppression has helped Yesavage post a 1.14 WHIP despite the free passes.
Workload management was likely going to be in the cards for Yesavage down the stretch. He tossed 112 innings between the minors and majors in his first pro campaign last year. He added another 27 2/3 frames in the postseason. Even after the delayed start to the year, Yesavage entered August at 91 2/3 innings. Toronto could’ve trimmed his outings down the stretch, particularly if the club fell out of the AL Wild Card race. That conversation is now moot with Yesavage going down with the knee injury.
The Blue Jays dealt longtime ace Kevin Gausman at the trade deadline, but added rotation help in the form of Jose Soriano and Jameson Taillon. The club also added Spencer Arrighetti in a trade with the Astros. Arrighetti was a candidate to step into the rotation at some point over the final two months of the season as he works his way back from a foot injury. His arrival in Toronto might be on hold after he was pulled from his Triple-A start last night (h/t Brian Frank/The Herd Chronicles on X).
Arrighetti hit the IL near the end of July with right foot nerve irritation. He returned to the mound with Buffalo on Thursday, but was removed during an at-bat in the third inning. Arrighetti had yet to allow a hit across 2 1/3 innings in his debut with his new organization. It’s unclear if his early departure was related to the foot injury.
The 26-year-old Arrighetti was limited to seven starts with the Astros last season due to thumb and elbow injuries. He’s been healthy this year, but struggled mightily before the trade. The righty posted an 8.34 ERA in his final nine starts with Houston.
