ROCHESTER, N.Y. – More muggy air and more chances for showers and thunderstorms today, though it will still be dry for a good portion of today, specifically through the morning. Some unsettled weather lies along a stationary front to our west and will cross over the region this afternoon, but there is uncertainty in the strength of these potential storms. It will depend on how much sunlight we see around midday as that will determine how unstable the atmosphere gets. If we do get that instability, storms will form passing west to east from around 4 to 8pm, with the main area of focus being south of the Thruway near the Finger Lakes. Lake breeze boundaries east of Lake Erie and south of Lake Ontario will likely aid in storm formation. The two main concerns with any storms today would be heavy rain and gusty winds, but chances for storms reaching severe status are still low. Threat Tracker is still Green. Stay tuned throughout the day for updates, but for now have an umbrella handy on your way out the door if you plan to be outside later this afternoon. Other than the potential rain and storms, it will be partly cloudy in the morning and mostly cloudy in the afternoon, and muggy with highs in the low 80s.

Chances of showers persist overnight as warm muggy air continues. It’ll be muggy again for Saturday, with additional chances for showers and thunder around late morning-midday into the afternoon, and again after sunset. Again no severe storms are expected, but this may have an impact on outdoor events nonetheless. Still, MOST of Saturday will be rain and storm free. We’ll continue to send out updates as per the timing and strength of any potential storms, but know that the Threat Tracker is still Green for now. Aside from that, it’ll be partly to mostly cloudy and muggy with highs in the low to mid 80s.

Sunday we’ll finally see some nicer weather. This will be the day for any outdoors plans as skies will be clear, temperature will stay comfortable with highs in the low 80s, and the dew points will be dropping by ten degrees, making for a much more comfortable feel to the air.

Unsettled weather returns later Monday and Tuesday, with another midweek dry break, then more unsettled weather possible on Thursday and Friday. Really hoping for some clearing Thursday night as that’s when the Perseid meteor shower peaks, with 100 shooting stars per hour (assuming no light pollution) and a near-new moon making for prime viewing conditions so long as there are no clouds. Stay tuned for updates!
