VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Public health officials in Ventura County confirmed Wednesday the first local case of measles since 2017.

Ventura County Public Health confirmed the case is related to international travel and are conducting an investigation to verify potential exposure locations and prevent further transmissions the health agency shared in a press release.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through airborne particles that are usually ejected by an infected person coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air for up to two hours explained Ventura County Public Health.

According to Ventura County Public Health, people who were at the following locations at the following times may be at risk:

July 26, 2026, at the Subway at 1941 N. Rose Ave., Suite 600 in Oxnard between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. July 27 - August 1, 2026, at Hacienda Furniture and Mattress at 3200 S. Saviers Road in Oxnard July 31, 2026, at the Cinemark Century Riverpark at 2766 Seaglass Way in Oxnard between 7:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. August 1, 2026 at the Walgreens at 1801 N. Rose Avenue in Oxnard between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. August 2, 2026 at Kaiser Permanente at 4949 Market Street in Ventura between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

According to Ventura County Public Health, symptoms of Measles usually appear within seven to 14 days after exposure and can last up to ten days and usually include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes.

A characteristic rash typically appears three to five days after the first symptoms, starting at the hairline and spreading down across the body, and about one in five people who get measles are hospitalized detailed Ventura County Public Health.

Severe complications from the virus can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and death especially in vulnerable people explained Ventura County Public Health.

There may be other locations where an exposure may have occurred, but if you were at the above locations and times -especially if you are experiencing any symptoms- Ventura County Public Health strongly encourages your to do the following:

Check your vaccination status. Review vaccination records to ensure you and your family are up to date on the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine Notify a health care provider if you are at higher risk. Contact and notify your health care provider as soon as possible about a potential exposure for guidance and next steps especially if you are pregnant, have an infant under 12 months of age, have a weakened immune system, and/or you are unimmunized Watch for symptoms. Monitor yourself for illness with fever and/or an unexplained rash from seven days to 21 days after an exposure When to seek medical care. If someone in your home develops symptoms
