“We are dealing with a hybrid attack scenario. All measures have been initiated in a highly professional manner,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told reporters during a press briefing at the airport late Wednesday, upon the launch of an official counterterrorism investigation.
Dobrindt did not name any specific “foreign power” and emphasized investigations were ongoing, citing an “excellent collaboration” between state and federal police, along with other authorities.

Late Tuesday night, local time, police in Leipzig first reported a “sighting of an unidentified object” at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
After examining the drone, the Federal Police's IED unit was able to successfully remove its detonator.
Minor damage was observed on the aircraft after it landed in Hanover, the capital city of Lower Saxony, Germany.

Dobrindt said Germany’s authorities are investigating what appears to be “a professional" explosive device. “We are not dealing with amateurs, but with professional actors,” he stated.
German authorities have stated that the perpetrators of the incident at the airport have not yet been identified.
Under Article 4 of NATO, members can bring any issue of concern, especially related to the security of a member country, to the table for discussion within the North Atlantic Council.
