PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Training camp brings thousands of fans to watch the Buffalo Bills practice, but some moments stand out more than others. This year, one of those special moments happened when players met members of AutismUp.
Ted Milko is autistic and nonverbal. He communicates by spelling out words.
“My son Ted is a speller. He has autism. He’s a non speaker, but he has learned to spell out words and communicates that way,” Sarah Milko said.
Sarah is Ted’s mom and the CEO of AutismUp. The organization started small but grew into something much bigger.
“We started it a small group of moms, way back when, when our then toddlers had recently been diagnosed with autism,” Milko said.
Sarah found there weren’t many resources available for families like hers. That’s when AutismUp was created to provide resources and activities to people with autism spectrum disorder. One of those activities includes visiting the Bills.
“We were fortunate to be invited this year through the Bills Community Initiative. And, we got to take I think there were 20, 20 of our, our team members who got to go this year,” Sarah said.
Ted was one of the people there. For him, the highlight wasn’t just getting autographs — it was spelling out the name of his favorite player, Dawson Knox.
“And the fact that, as big as they are and as good as they are, they take the time to connect with the community. It means everything,” Milko said.
Knox said the experience meant just as much to him.
“It always makes my day as well. Because, you know, it’s in my family, and I love my brother in law Max. And so being able to just kind of spend some time, see how guys are doing, talk to people. It’s something I always really enjoy,” Knox said.
Hundreds of autographs are given out daily at camp, but some signatures and some moments just go a little further.
“The fact that he was willing to be patient and and wait for Teddy to spell out and say hello was everything. And that that’s me talking as a mom, right? It was just a really terrific experience. And Ted is still flying high from it,” Sarah said.
