ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are pressing the Food and Drug Administration for answers on the nation’s cancer drug shortage.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reached out to local hospitals to see if the shortage is having any local impact. Strong Hospital and Rochester Regional Health both said so far they haven’t felt the impact of the drug shortage. But New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Florida Sen. Rick Scott say if the shortage persists, doctors could be forced to ration medications or prioritize certain patients.
Stablow also spoke with the Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club Rochester, which supports cancer patients and their families. One counselor, Amanda Miller, said she hasn’t had anyone unable to get treatment due to the shortage but said over the past couple years she’s seen more people who struggle to afford medication. According to the American Journal of Managed Care, a peer-reviewed medical journal, drug shortages can drive up costs of treatment.
“That’s the biggest thing with drug shortages, with doctor shortages, with appointment shortages. Advocate for yourself. Reach out. Get those second opinions, talk to your doctor, see what’s out there to see where they can modify,” Miller said. “If there is a medication that isn’t a shortage, what can they do to modify that or supplement it with something different? That can be at least enough to hold over until things get better, in that situation.”
Among the drugs in short supply are cisplatin and carboplatin, which the National Institutes of Health says are given to up to 20% of cancer patients.
The FDA said it’s aware of the concerns brought up by Gillibrand and Scott and the agency is actively working to lessen the impact of the shortage and support patient access to treatment. Senators say the shortage is driven by manufacturing issues, shipping delays and some companies not making the same drugs they used to.
