The Opener: Dodgers, Peralta, Genao ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

Welcome to the big leagues, George Lombard Jr. The Yankees’ top prospect slugged a solo home run in his second career at-bat (video link via MLB on X). It was one of two homers for New York in a tight 2-0 victory.

1. Dodgers drop Skubal’s debut

Left-hander Tarik Skubal, the biggest piece moved at the trade deadline, debuted for the Dodgers on Tuesday at Wrigley Field. He fired six innings of two-run ball against the Cubs, but it wasn’t enough to end L.A.’s losing streak. The Dodgers fell 5-1 and have now dropped five straight and seven of their last nine games. The club isn’t in any danger as far as the NL West title is concerned, but the race is tightening for the two first-round byes in the NL. The Dodgers are now one win behind the Brewers and only one victory ahead of the Braves.

2. Peralta struggles in first Rays start

Tampa Bay got a grand slam out of trade deadline acquisition Liam Hicks in his team debut last night. Freddy Peralta‘s first appearance with the club didn’t go as smoothly. The righty was tagged for seven earned runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Rockies. Peralta permitted nine hits, including two homers, and struck out three. It’s a continuation of the underwhelming performance he showed heading into the deadline. Peralta had an ERA well over 6.00 in his final 10 starts with the Mets. Tampa Bay surely has some ideas on how to get Peralta back on track, but it’ll probably take more than a few days in the organization for those changes to come to fruition.

3. Genao gets the call

Guardians top prospect Angel Genao is heading to the big leagues. Cleveland is expected to promote the infielder ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against the Mets. Genao has spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he’s slashed .309/.395/.494 with 10 home runs and nine stolen bases. The 22-year-old saw time at every infield spot except first base with Columbus. The Genao promotion could be bad news for Jose Ramirez, who was scratched on Tuesday with left wrist inflammation. The Guardians don’t have a clear opening in the infield with everyone healthy. Ramirez returned from a left hamate fracture less than two weeks ago.
