A double-fatal crash shut down part of a major expressway in the Chicago area during the Wednesday morning commute.
Police said the two-vehicle crash happened just before 1 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 88 near Eola Road in Aurora, leaving at least one vehicle “fully engulfed in flames.”
Two people who were inside the fiery car were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The crash shut down the expressway for hours as investigators analyzed the scene.
The roadway reopened just before 5:30 a.m., but police said an investigation remained ongoing. The four-hour closure impacted the commute in from Aurora and Naperville, causing back-ups for several miles, according to NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin.
