Clusters of thunderstorms could bring threats of heavy rain to the Chicago area Wednesday.
Waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected to move in during the afternoon and evening hours Wednesday, bringing potentially heavy rainfall, localized flooding and possibly even some damaging wind gusts for some.
After mid-morning showers come to an end for some, a second wave is expected to hit later in the day.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said the next round is expected to arrive around 4 p.m., with heavier rain expected during the rush hour commute.
“Heavy rain will continue to be possible and then we do have that rain passing through northwest Indiana,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. “It looks like at least that heavy rain does come to an end by about 10 p.m.”
The Storm Prediction Center had listed parts of the region under a “marginal” risk for severe weather, a level one out of five, with damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and localized flooding possible. That threat appeared to shift more to the west, however, as Wednesday morning rain arrived, including southern DeKalb and Grundy counties.
“The overall threat of flash flooding will ultimately be dependent upon if and where multiple storms tomove over the same areas (training),” the National Weather Service reported. “While this possibility cannot be ruled out on a localized basis in parts of our area, the better potential for this may end up remaining south-southwest of our area.”
Scattered showers could even persist into the morning hours of Thursday, with high temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday settling right around 80 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to warm slightly into the low-80s on Friday and then into the weekend, but another round of showers and thunderstorms could potentially fire up late Friday night and especially on Saturday morning, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
More rounds of showers and storms are possible on Sunday and then even into next week, with the pattern finally potentially drying out by the middle of next week, along with cooler temperatures dropping into the mid-to-upper 70s.
