ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It seems that for most of this summer we’ve been dodging that typical summertime humidity. That changes big time for the rest of the week as a Bermuda high and large upper level trough over Canada settles in, causing southwest flow to overtake our region and shovel in a ton of Gulf and Atlantic moisture. Dew points today will reach the low 70s, and when you combine that with high temperatures in the upper 80s (some may reach 90), it means it’ll feel more like the low to mid 90s at times this afternoon. This humidity will help to fuel late day scattered thunderstorms, which will likely form in the Genesee Valley and western Southern Tier. These storms are unlikely to be severe, but will bring the potential for heavy downpours. Timing wise, these storms will likely form in the evening and last into tonight. Not everyone will see these storms, but keep an eye to the sky and stay tuned with News10 NBC for updates. Besides the storms and humidity, it’ll be a partly cloudy day.
Mostly cloudy and muggy overnight with lows in the upper 60s, then tomorrow will have largely the same weather but a better chance for more widespread rain and storms. Humidity stays elevated and heat remains present, but increased instability and an approaching cold front will provide a better mechanism for storm formation. Not too much wind shear however, which means the chances for any storms to become severe remains on the lower side. These storms will likely form earlier than today’s, in the mid afternoon, and will be found in the western Southern Tier, the Genesee valley, and Finger Lakes region. Heavy downpours remain the main concern, and storms will pass off to the east and fizzle out going into the night.
More unsettled weather Friday and Saturday as the heat, humidity, and overall weather pattern remains largely the same. No one day looks to feature particularly strong storms, but there will be storms nonetheless. Heavy rain is the main concern, which clearly we need more of, right? Just kidding. A not-so-fun fact: This is the wettest year in Rochester through August 4th in 79 years, and the second wettest year through August 4th overall. It’ll be interesting to see where this year lands once it’s all said and done. Dry, sunny weather will hopefully be back for Sunday. Current long-term trends suggest that near-normal precipitation rates may not return until late August.
